Eden Darlington customer Frank Hughes, a D-Day veteran, has been awarded France's highest military honour, the Legion D'Honneur, for his bravery during the Normandy Landings. Frank, who served in the Royal Navy as a signalman during the Second World War, was commemorated with the medal at a ceremony at Darlington's Town Hall in December 2015.
Friends, family, and Royal British Legion members gathered to watch the Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Tom Nutt award Mr Hughes the medal. The 90-year-old Darlington resident said:
I'm all choked up inside. It's a great privilege to be recognised. I only played a small part - like thousands of others I was there and that was it. I feel lucky that I survived and made it back. I can't put into words, I feel very emotional.
Frank, who was born and bred in Skegness, enlisted in the Navy at 18 and took part in the Juno beach landings in June 1944.
